$2.87 Million Grant to Expand AP Program in Houston County

The Advanced Placement classes in Houston County high schools will be expanding for military families.

According to a release, the AP program will be expanding to the five high schools and will also benefit eight middle schools thanks to a $2.87 million grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity.

While any student will be able to benefit from the program, Houston County Schools were selected because of their large military family population, Houston County spokesperson Beth McLaughlin says.

At an event announcing the program last week, Gov. Deal said, "This expansion of NMSI's AP Program in Georgia will help encourage more of our young people to pursue careers in these fields and build the content knowledge and skills of our STEM teaching workforce."

Advanced Placement classes allow students to take college level courses while still in high school and take a test to help earn college credit when applying to college.

Red Cross Awards Ten "Hometown Heroes"

They may be your colleague. They could be the person sitting next to you in a restaurant.

Anyone can be hero. Wednesday, the Central Georgia Chapter of the Red Cross recognized ten of them.

They honored individuals or groups that went above and beyond to help others.

Local Red Cross Director Tracy Willis-Kight says the people they recognize as heroes never consider their deeds heroic.

Willis-Kight said, "Every year, I love making the phone call that they are this year's hero, because they are always shocked and humbled. You really have to coach them to accept this award, because they are just truly heroes in the hearts."

One of the heroes was Amanda Farrell from Warner Robins.

Brothers, Veterans Transition After Military Career

Brothers, Veterans Transition After Military Career

For many military veterans, transitioning back to civilian life can be a struggle. Twenty-eight-year-old David Smith experienced that firsthand.

While serving in the U.S. Army, David deployed to Iraq two times. He was also stationed in Germany and Fort Bragg, N.C.

He joined the military after graduating from high school, looking for what he calls the “real experience.” When he signed up, he marked the fourth generation in his family to serve in the armed forces.
