"MiG-Killer" F-4D Gets Fresh Paint

"MiG-Killer" F-4D Gets Fresh Paint

The Museum of Aviation's F-4D Phantom II, tail number 66-7554, is being repainted. The aircraft arrived at the museum in the summer of 2007 after it was removed from outdoor display on a pedestal at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Once the repainting is complete, the aircraft will go on display in Hangar One.

The markings will include two stars representing North Vietnamese MiG fighters. On February 14, 1968, pilot Major Rex D. Howerton and weapon systems officer 1st Lieutenant Ted L. Voigt of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron used the F-4's externally mounted 20mm cannon to shoot down a Mig-17. The second star represents another MiG kill in combat that was claimed by crew members and initially confirmed. However, months after the victory, the confirmation was withdrawn. The second star appears in historical photos and will be repainted on the aircraft.
