Georgia National Guard Observes 376th Birthday

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga.- The Georgia National Guard will mark the 376th anniversary of the birth of the National Guard during a ceremony today attended by the Governor of Georgia and members of the Georgia congressional delegation.

The ceremony will be held at the Clay National Guard Center on Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga.

On December 13, 1636, the Massachusetts legislature authorized the organization of militia companies in the vicinity of Boston. This charter marked the creation of the Citizen Soldier that is the hallmark of the National Guard.

The National Guard is the oldest service component of the United States Armed Forces and predates the creation of the United States Army by nearly 150 years.

If the bill doesn’t pass the Senate and House by year’s end, it will vanish on Jan. 3 when a new session of Congress convenes. Legislation left hanging from a previous Congress dies when the new session begins.

The Senate moved Monday to make sure nobody profits from lying about being a military hero.

The Stolen Valor Act of 2012, sponsored by decorated Vietnam War veteran Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., passed the Senate as an amendment to the 2013 defense authorization bill.

Webb’s proposal makes it a federal crime to make a false claim about having served in the military or having received a military decoration if the object of the lie is personal gain.
