689th Combat Communications Deactivates in Ceremony

689th Combat Communications Deactivates in Ceremony

Robins AFB
Office of Public Affairs

The 689th Combat Communications Wing will stand down in a ceremony here Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The inactivation is the result of Air Force force structure changes, including a reduction in combat air forces, tied to the President’s FY13 budget.

Two civilian employees and 33 military members will be affected. The civilians will transfer to the 5th Combat Communications Group here. The military members will be reassigned or, if eligible, may retire or separate.

With the inactivation of the wing, the 5th Combat Communications Group here will realign as a direct reporting unit under Air Force Space Command’s 24th Air Force.

“Combat communicators are an integral part of 24 AF’s cyber capabilities,” said Col Joseph Scherrer, 689th commander. “The Air Force will continue the legacy of Combat Communications excellence through the 5th CCG.”
